Stem cells from amniotic fluid – will religious stem cell opponents still be opposed?
Today scientists announced that they have found useful stem cells in the amniotic fluid of pregnant mothers. This method will completely avoid the religion-based “destruction of the zygot” concern. Will religious opponents of stem cells oppose this method as well?

So Julian, are you opposed to medical science altogether? Why does god allow us to discover ways to treat and prevent disease and suffering?
Jim, I’d love to think you are right that christians will all feel this way, but check out Julian’s response. We are not trying to be bigots, we are just concerned that fundys such as Julian will continue to prevent the use of useful stem cells.

Some might. They won’t read the article, they’ll just see “Stem Cell” and declare it evil.

actually, amniocentesis is not a procedure entirely devoid of risk.

Let me put it this way, to a religionist, amniotic fluid is the same as zygot. It’s all playing God.

I think many will still be opposed, since many don’t really understand the science behind stem cell research enough to distinguish between this way and the older way. The Religious Right tends to not trust anything they don’t understand.

Christians have “NEVER” been against stem sell research. They are against farming embryos for body parts.

The Church will probably not oppose this as it does not oppose the use of stem cells from the umbilical cord.

No. They shouldn’t… unless they dwell on the small risk of miscarriage possible during amniosynthesis. I think this scientific breakthrough is great news and promises hope for a host of future medical treatments. Bravo scientists!!!

They’ll find a way.

Stem cells are available in EVERY LIVING HUMAN BEING their entire life, and Christians chose to ignore this well known fact out of convenience, so of course they’ll still complain that it’s against “God’s plan” to use them.
Stem cells are found in adults, children, umbilical cord blood and now (surprise!) amniotic fluid. In fact, a common treatment for cancer is to donate your own stem cells before chemotherapy, then have them injected back into your bone marrow to rebuild your immune system from your own cells.
So the argument that “stem cell research kills babies” has even less merit.

I see you are all lining up thinking at Christians are narrow minded bigots. All we are against is creating fertilized human eggs for the sole purpose collecting stem cells. I applaud the research being done to cure terrible diseases like Parkinson’s and diabetes. I don’t know any Christian that wouldn’t be thrilled about a cure for human suffering.. It sounds like, from the answers I have read here that all you God haters are the bigots not the Christians…. Jim
